Permutations in combinatorics

I wanted to share  something I realized because I figure someone might of made the same mistake I did.

This whole time I thought that permutations of [n] were as described in group theory.

Read this if you thought the same.

  1. Servando, I’m not sure I understand exactly what the confusion is – permutations are the same in combinatorics and in group theory. Were you confusing one-line notation and cycle notation, as described here?
